Many believe that the tradition of monthly birthstones ( and not zodiac birthstones ) is based on the breastplate of Aaron. It was a religious ceremonial garment set with twelve gemstones that represented the twelve tribes of Israel (corresponding with the twelve months of the year.)

There is some confusion as to which gemstones were set in that breastplate and because of that different cultures around the world have different birthstone lists.

We think that if you believe in the magical properties of your birthstone then choose from the older traditional ones like the ayurvedic birthstones or the traditional birthstones, otherwise, simply choose the gemstone you like the most.

Birthstones associated with gemstones have been used for centuries as a way to give good luck and health. The birthstones are divided into four groups :

Modern Birthstones

-Adopted by the association of jeweler's of U.S.A. Mostly used in USA and Australia.

Traditional Birthstones

- Mostly reflecting polish tradition.

Ayurvedic Birthstones

-Originating from India.

Mystical Birthstones

-Originating from Tibet.

There is another theory going around which says that individuals needed to own an entire set of twelve gemstones and rotate them monthly, for the full healing properties and powers of the gemstone to take effect.
